Seismic Isolation Bearings: The Project Inputs That Should Travel With the RFQ
A practical handoff from approved analysis to a manufacturable bearing and test package.
9 min readApproved performance targets come first
Seismic bearing selection follows the project’s approved analysis and performance objectives. The RFQ should clearly identify relevant displacement demand, vertical and horizontal combinations, target behavior, return requirements and any specific verification tests. This avoids treating an isolation device as an ordinary support component.
Existing geometry changes the answer
For retrofit work, survey information and installation clearances are central inputs. Existing diaphragms, pier caps, anchor zones, jacking points and staged traffic conditions can materially influence the feasible configuration.
Testing is part of the scope
Where prototype, qualification or production testing is required, define the test basis, witness requirements, acceptance criteria and documentation route alongside the manufacturing scope. A clear plan helps the project team sequence review and release decisions.

Send the bearing schedule or drawing to Andy. The review starts with your project data and the applicable requirements.
