Selecting Bridge Bearings for Urban Viaducts: Repeatability Without Losing Control

How to standardise typical spans while retaining the support-specific information that matters.

7 min read

Standardise the family, not the assumptions

Urban viaducts often benefit from repeatable bearing families because they simplify procurement and site coordination. The supporting data must still identify local fixed points, guides, movement direction, reaction differences and any curve or seismic effects.

Design for constrained access

Tight streets, operating corridors and staged traffic management affect how bearings are delivered, stored, set and inspected. Clear package marking, lifting information and installation references are therefore as valuable as a polished product catalogue.

Preserve maintenance access

A bearing that cannot be safely inspected or replaced becomes a lifecycle problem. Coordinate access, drainage, debris control and jacking strategy while the support detail is still open for review.
