Bearing Materials and Corrosion Protection: Questions to Resolve Before Fabrication

Why exposure classification, interface protection and documentation matter alongside load capacity.

8 min read

Exposure is a design input

Support zones can experience standing water, de-icing salts, airborne contaminants and restricted inspection access. Coating selection and local detailing need to match the actual environment, not only the bridge’s general location. The approved project system should identify surface preparation, finish, repair method and protection of machined or sliding surfaces.

Interfaces need compatible materials

A sliding or rotational interface depends on the controlled interaction of its materials, geometry and contact condition. Ask how the components are stored, protected during transport, inspected and marked for installation. These details help preserve the intended performance before the bridge is opened to service.

Traceability supports project control

Material records, inspection points and part marking provide a practical chain from approved drawing to delivered assembly. They are particularly useful where multiple support functions are packaged together and must be installed at exact locations.
